5th International Symposium on Academic Writing and Critical Thinking
- Disruptive technologies have emerged throughout the history of academic writing
instruction, each raising significant questions about how scholarly knowledge will
be produced and distributed in the future. Currently, the rapid development of
artificial intelligence such as large language models, ChatGPT, or neural machine
translation have prompted scholars to reconsider fundamental concepts such as
innovation, authorship, and academic integrity. Currently, the rapid development of
artificial intelligence applications such as large language models, GPT, or neural
machine translation have prompted scholars to reconsider fundamental concepts such as
innovation, authorship, and academic integrity. Can established modes of teaching
academic writing and critical thinking coexist with A.I.? How can teachers and
students make optimal use of A.I.? Alternatively, should developments in A.I. be
met with skepticism, vigilance, or active resistance?
The Fifth International Symposium on Academic Writing and Critical Thinking seeks to
promote stimulating discussion of questions such as these by bringing together scholars
from various fields. Of particular interest are papers and panels that address the
relationship between A.I. and the teaching of academic writing in terms of theoretical
analysis and concrete pedagogical strategies. Scholars at any stage in their academic
career are invited to submit proposals for oral presentations of twenty minutes plus
ten minutes for question and discussion. Proposals in English or Japanese are welcome
to encourage lively and dynamic exchanges around the symposium theme and related topics.
Send proposals of no more than 250 words to awct@ilas.nagoya-u.ac.jp. Scholars should
indicate the language in which they intend to present and write their proposal in that
same language. Please include your name, institutional affiliation, phone number, postal
address, and email address. The deadline for your submissions is November 13, 2023.
