●本授業の目的およびねらい
In this course, students engage with English through integrated activities in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The aim of the course is for students to become more confident, fluent users of academic English by reading challenging texts, reflecting on them, and discussing them with partners.

●授業内容
1. In each unit, students explore readings on such thought-provoking topics as words and pictures, love and attraction, food and health; design and engineering, the human journey, and conservation challenges; song and dance, investigations, and reputations; science frontiers, green living, and quality of life; and a number of World Heritage Sites.
2. Students study readings in the textbook in class and for homework, answering questions on comprehension and vocabulary and completing supplemental Reading Summaries. Students then prepare questions about the content and the implications of the readings, which they use to discuss the readings and quiz their partners in order to prepare for unit exams.
3. Students also expand their vocabulary and their general appreciation of language. To these ends, students learn the definitions of all the words in each unit's target vocabulary. Such activities conform to Nation (2001) and (2013).

●注意事項
対面授業に加え、課外学習として、英語(コミュニケーション)用「ぎゅっとe」リスニングを課し、その消化率に基づく評価を授業全体の評価の20%とする。また、TOEFLITPの成績(Listening、Structure)の評価を30%とする。5回以上欠席をした場合、「欠席」の評価がつく。履修取り下げ制度は採用しない。

2. Students are encouraged to consider their learning in metacognitive terms:
a. At the end of each class, students write their opinions about what they have learned, liked, or want to know.
b. At the end of the semester, students write a final report in which they reflect on their learning over the entire course.
