The main aim of this course will be to cultivate communicative skills in        

English and to think about issues of cultural, social, and even personal

There are no prerequisites, but students must be prepared to use the English    

language.                                                                       

                                                                                

Each class session will be devoted to the main parts of a chapter in the        

textbook, and any remaining sessions after the book has been completed will     

focus on activities throughout the book that were not done.  The emphasis       

of the class meetings will be on oral reading, pronunciation practice,          

listening, and conversation practice, while the homework will involve           

reading the chapter essay, doing the associated comprehension check,            

writing an essay of about 300 words, and otherwise preparing for the class      

meetings.  Be aware that the essays will need to be submitted on time, and

Essays combined (i.e. the average of the individual essay scores) 34%,          

in-class participation (based on impressions and activities) 33%, and           

attendance 33%.                                                                 

The textbook will be made available by the teacher from the first class         

meeting, and it is expected to cost less than 2000 yen.                         

                                                                                

A standard dictionary that can be used for working with English and one's       

native language is recommended.
