●本授業の目的およびねらい
本授業は、学術的な英文に関する基礎的なリーディング能力とライティング能力の養成
を目的とする。そのねらいは、研究拠点大学である名古屋大学の学生にふさわしい学術
英語を使いこなす能力を身につけるところにある。論理的な英文のカギとなるエッセイ
の構造に着目し、目的に応じて必要な情報をいかに読みとるか、また逆に、自分の考え
をその根拠とともにいかに説得力ある論理的な英文に組み立てるかを学ぶ。将来、専門
の論文を英語で読んだり書いたりする時に、指針となる英文構成法の基礎、および実際
に役立つ英語表現を多く習得する。

●授業内容
Because the 'Academic English Intermediate' courses are to emphasize reading
and writing, this course will focus on reading an illustrated book about
contemporary America and writing short essays (around 250-300 words) about
assigned contents. A schedule specifying the reading material for each week
will be handed out in the first class meeting, and the assigned essays will
have to be handed in at the beginning of each lesson for which they are
assigned. In-class activities are likely to include quizzes to check for
comprehension, group work, and explanations of chapter content by the
teacher. Please be aware that besides the reading and writing activities
which will be assigned specifically for this course, students will be
required to do 'out-of-class study' connected to the English department's
e-learning program as well as to prepare for the TOEFL-ITP and Criterion exams.

●成績評価の方法
In the part of the course for which the teacher has responsibility, 50%
of the grade will be based on the essays and 50% on in-class activities.
That's half of the grade for the course.

●教科書
Information about the textbook was not available at the time of syllabus
preparation, but it will be an illustrated version of a similar book
dealing with 'multiculturalism' in the United States.

At least one standard dictionary which helps you to work with the English
language.

●注意事項
対面授業に加え、課外学習として「ぎゅっとe」の上級リーディングを課し、その消化率
に基づく評価を授業全体の評価の20%とする。また、1年終了時に実施されるTOEF
L−ITPの成績(リーディング・セクション)とCriterion試験の成績を授業
全体の評価の30%とする。
