●本授業の目的およびねらい
本授業科目は,専門的学習のツールとして外国語の能力を高め,異文化理解を深めて,国際社会に相応しい教養を育むことが目的である。 リスニングとスピーキングを主としたコミュニケーションの能力を高める授業を行い、日常会話、さらにはディスカッションやプレゼンテーションのための基礎力を養成する。

●授業内容
Most of our class time will be spent developing and practicing presentations through pair work, group work, and class discussion. Students will give two presentations (7 to 10 minutes each) about personally and socially significant topics that they choose. The first presentation will focus on providing information about the topic, while the second presentation will focus on making an argument about the topic. As each student gives her or his presentation, the other students will be expected to listen attentively, take notes, and ask questions following the presentation. The instructor will also model presentation techniques and provide some focused listening and speaking activities.

35% presentations; 15% participation and homework; 50% items described below in “注意事項.”

None is required, but students are recommended to bring a dictionary to class.

●注意事項
課外学習として「Academic Express3」を課し、その消化率に基づく評価を授業全体の評価の20%とする。また、TOEFL ITP(Listening,Structure)の評価を30%とする。5回以上欠席をした場合、「欠席」の評価がつく。英語検定試験による単位認定を申請する学生以外は、履修取り下げを認めない。

The purpose of this course is to help students improve their foreign language proficiency, understand foreign cultures, and acquire the knowledge required in a globalized society.
