本授業の目的およびねらい
本授業科目は,専門的学習のツールとして外国語の能力を高め,異文化理解を深めて,国際社会に相応しい教養を育むことが目的である。
授業の構成
This course takes advantage of a small class size to provide students with opportunities to develop practical English skills in writing, as well as general communication, through informal group interaction and individual feedback.

The course is likely to be conducted online for the foreseeable future: the aim is to take advantage of that situation and explore its potential. The course will begin with a discussion (probably through Zoom) to find what specific skills and types of writing students most want to practice and improve through the course.

Each lesson will involve informal discussion in small groups and as a class. Short interactive lectures will discuss common writing issues, then introduce general topics, perhaps with video and short reading, to stimulate discussion and writing on a variety of themes. Then students will write for 20-30 minutes during the class or in their own time. They will submit this (online) and receive detailed individual feedback to aid development. Students will sometimes also share with others what they have written through short informal presentations.

Classes thus include the following:
Informal group/pair discussion
Discussion of common writing issues
Theme discussion/reading/video
Short writing exercises (some graded, most not)
Feedback and correction
Short informal presentations (sometimes)

担当教員からのメッセージ
This class belongs to students as much as the instructor. Together, let’s use the freedom offered by this kind of course to serve your own needs and desires for English learning, communication and cross-cultural understanding. I hope students will take this opportunity to develop their practical English skills in a relaxed atmosphere with students from various faculties.

I will be happy to work with students to deal with their individual needs, so never hesitate to consult me: mark@ilas.nagoya-u.ac.jp
