| 本授業の目的およびねらい | | | 本授業科目は，専門的学習のツールとして外国語の能力を高め，異文化理解を深めて，国際社会に相応しい教養を育むことが目的である。そのねらいは、研究拠点大学である名古屋大学の学生にふさわしい学術英語を使いこなす能力を身につけるところにある。論理的な英文のカギとなるエッセイの構造に着目し、目的に応じて必要な情報をいかに読みとるか、また逆に、自分の考えをその根拠とともにいかに説得力ある論理的な英文に組み立てるかを学ぶ。将来、専門の論文を英語で読んだり書いたりする時に、指針となる英文構成法の基礎、および実際に役立つ英語表現を多く習得する。 |

| 授業の構成 | | Developing reading and writing skills at the intermediate level with an emphasis on topics related to science, technology and social sciences using the textbook.
The readings in ‘Outlook on Science and Technology’ will be used as a basis for weekly written exercises.
Due to the large size of this class, I will not be using Zoom on a regular basis. |

| 成績評価の方法と基準 | | | Weekly assignments will be given as the equivalent of attendance. You may fail the course if you miss more than four weekly assignments. There will be a final project based on one of the units which we have studied (you will be given a choice of question). This will account for 100% of your mark, though I may make adjustments to the final grade if you have performed especially well (or badly) on the weekly assignments. |

| 注意事項 | | | 課外学習として「ぎゅっとｅ」リーディングを課し、その消化率に基づく評価を授業全体の評価の２０％とする。またＴＯＥＦＬＩＴＰ （Ｒｅａｄｉｎｇ）およびＣｒｉｔｅｒｉｏｎの評価を３０％とする。なお、５回以上欠席をした場合、「欠席」の評価がつく。英語検定試験による単位認定を申請する学生以外は、履修取り下げを認めない。 |

| 担当教員からのメッセージ | | The purpose of this course is to help students improve their foreign language proficiency, understand foreign cultures, and acquire the knowledge required in a globalized society. Students are expected to develop their skills as they move towards the mastery of professional academic English. With a special focus on essay structures, students will learn how to extract necessary information effectively and write in a logical and persuasive manner.
