| 本授業の目的およびねらい | | | 本授業科目は，専門的学習のツールとして外国語の能力を高め，異文化理解を深めて，国際社会に相応しい教養を育むことが目的である。そのねらいは、研究拠点大学である名古屋大学の学生にふさわしい学術英語を使いこなす能力を身につけるところにある。論理的な英文のカギとなるエッセイの構造に着目し、目的に応じて必要な情報をいかに読みとるか、また逆に、自分の考えをその根拠とともにいかに説得力ある論理的な英文に組み立てるかを学ぶ。将来、専門の論文を英語で読んだり書いたりする時に、指針となる英文構成法の基礎、および実際に役立つ英語表現を多く習得する。 |

| 授業の構成 | | | This course seeks to develop students’ English reading and writing skills for academic purposes. This course is taught entirely in English. Over the semester, students will read and analyze various articles and essays. Through studying various English text structures (including compare and contrast essays, argumentative essays, opinion essays, and descriptive essays), students will develop their own essays on various topics. In class, students will work in pairs to proofread each other’s writing. Emphasis will be placed on increasing students’ vocabulary and learning useful English expressions. Through these activities, students will develop vital proofreading skills and an appreciation for the development of English academic essays. In addition, students will learn correct citation procedures, and be expected to include sources in their final submissions. |

| 注意事項 | | | 課外学習として「ぎゅっとｅ」リーディングを課し、その消化率に基づく評価を授業全体の評価の２０％とする。またＴＯＥＦＬＩＴＰ （Ｒｅａｄｉｎｇ）およびＣｒｉｔｅｒｉｏｎの評価を３０％とする。なお、５回以上欠席をした場合、「欠席」の評価がつく。英語検定試験による単位認定を申請する学生以外は、履修取り下げを認めない。 |

| 担当教員からのメッセージ | | The purpose of this course is to help students improve their foreign language proficiency, understand foreign cultures, and acquire the knowledge required in a globalized society. Students are expected to master professional academic English. With a special focus on essay structures, students will learn how to extract necessary information effectively and write in a logical and persuasive manner. Students will also study sentence composition methods and useful expressions.
