| 本授業の目的およびねらい | | | 本授業科目は，専門的学習のツールとして外国語の能力を高め，異文化理解を深めて，国際社会に相応しい教養を育むことが目的である。そのねらいは、研究拠点大学である名古屋大学の学生にふさわしい学術英語を使いこなす能力を身につけるところにある。論理的な英文のカギとなるエッセイの構造に着目し、目的に応じて必要な情報をいかに読みとるか、また逆に、自分の考えをその根拠とともにいかに説得力ある論理的な英文に組み立てるかを学ぶ。将来、専門の論文を英語で読んだり書いたりする時に、指針となる英文構成法の基礎、および実際に役立つ英語表現を多く習得する。 |
| | | 授業の構成 | | | This course teaches students the basic skills in reading and writing academic texts. This helps students master the ability to use academic English which is necessary for students at Nagoya University, a research-oriented university. Focusing on paragraph structure as the key to the composition of logical English texts, students will learn how to read texts to obtain the necessary information and how to arrange their ideas together with supporting evidence to create persuasive and logical English texts. Students will learn the guiding principles of English textual structure and numerous English expressions that will be useful to them when they read and write academic papers in English. The topics covered depend on student interest and relevance. In the past, topics on people, society, history, environment and technology have been covered in this class. The lecturer prioritizes topics which spark student interest and therefore facilitate students working on their English skills while engaging with topics which are relevant to them. |

| | | 教科書・テキスト | | | | | 参考書 | | | | | 注意事項 | | | 課外学習として「ぎゅっとｅ」リーディングを課し、その消化率に基づく評価を授業全体の評価の２０％とする。またＴＯＥＦＬＩＴＰ （Ｒｅａｄｉｎｇ）およびＣｒｉｔｅｒｉｏｎの評価を３０％とする。なお、５回以上欠席をした場合、「欠席」の評価がつく。英語検定試験による単位認定を申請する学生以外は、履修取り下げを認めない。 |

Students are expected to master professional academic English. With a special focus on essay structures, students will learn how to extract necessary information effectively and write in a logical and persuasive manner. Students will also study sentence composition methods and useful expressions.
