| 本授業の目的およびねらい | | | 本授業科目は，専門的学習のツールとして外国語の能力を高め，異文化理解を深めて，国際社会に相応しい教養を育むことが目的である。そのねらいは、研究拠点大学である名古屋大学の学生にふさわしい学術英語を使いこなす能力を身につけるところにある。論理的な英文のカギとなるエッセイの構造に着目し、目的に応じて必要な情報をいかに読みとるか、また逆に、自分の考えをその根拠とともにいかに説得力ある論理的な英文に組み立てるかを学ぶ。将来、専門の論文を英語で読んだり書いたりする時に、指針となる英文構成法の基礎、および実際に役立つ英語表現を多く習得する。 |
| | | 授業の構成 | | | In this class students will be expected to produce written work in English to a reasonably high academic standard on a variety of topics. Although research and reading homework might be given, the majority of the writing will take place in the class. Students will work invididually on their writing, but there will be class time given for feedback and pairwork with other students. All written work will be checked by the teacher and students will be encouraged to correct mistakes by themselves. Generally the class will proceed at a pace of one topic per two classes, or one topic per class for shorter exercises. Towards the end of the semester students will be expected to work on a paper on a topic chosen by themselves, decided in consultation with the teacher, for submission at the end of the semester. In addition to written work, there will also be review of grammar points and advice given on writing style, referencing, layout and the differences between written and spoken language. |

| | | 教科書・テキスト | | | | | 参考書 | | | | | 注意事項 | | | 課外学習として「ぎゅっとｅ」リーディングを課し、その消化率に基づく評価を授業全体の評価の２０％とする。またＴＯＥＦＬＩＴＰ （Ｒｅａｄｉｎｇ）およびＣｒｉｔｅｒｉｏｎの評価を３０％とする。なお、５回以上欠席をした場合、「欠席」の評価がつく。英語検定試験による単位認定を申請する学生以外は、履修取り下げを認めない。 |
| | | 本授業に関する参照Webページ | | | | | 担当教員からのメッセージ | | The purpose of this course is to help students improve their foreign language proficiency, understand foreign cultures, and acquire the knowledge required in a globalized society. Students are expected to master professional academic English. With a special focus on essay structures, students will learn how to extract necessary information effectively and write in a logical and persuasive manner. Students will also study sentence composition methods and useful expressions.

In the writing section of the class students will be given guidance to
correct their own mistakes and some face-to-face time with the teacher will
