| 本授業の目的およびねらい | | | 本授業科目は，専門的学習のツールとして外国語の能力を高め，異文化理解を深めて，国際社会に相応しい教養を育むことが目的である。そのねらいは、研究拠点大学である名古屋大学の学生にふさわしい学術英語を使いこなす能力を身につけるところにある。論理的な英文のカギとなるエッセイの構造に着目し、目的に応じて必要な情報をいかに読みとるか、また逆に、自分の考えをその根拠とともにいかに説得力ある論理的な英文に組み立てるかを学ぶ。将来、専門の論文を英語で読んだり書いたりする時に、指針となる英文構成法の基礎、および実際に役立つ英語表現を多く習得する。 |

| 授業の構成 | | Building on what they learned in AEB, students will use the the textbook and instructional materials provided by the teacher to learn appropriate skills for writing many kinds of materials using a variety of skills, including compare/contrast, descriptions, opinions, etc. Students will learn to proofread their own and their fellow students’ texts, will learn about specific writing topics, and will get practice that will help them complete each week’s short writing assignment.
The particular topics and weekly activities will depend on the interests and ability of the students that will be evaluated during the first week of class. |

| 成績評価の方法と基準 | | | Grades will be based on the homework assignments, class participation, and a final exam, as well as overall effort and on the criteria (50%). E-learning (20%) and TOEFL-ITP & Criterion scores (30%) will be added. |

| 注意事項 | | | 課外学習として「ぎゅっとｅ」リーディングを課し、その消化率に基づく評価を授業全体の評価の２０％とする。またＴＯＥＦＬＩＴＰ （Ｒｅａｄｉｎｇ）およびＣｒｉｔｅｒｉｏｎの評価を３０％とする。なお、５回以上欠席をした場合、「欠席」の評価がつく。英語検定試験による単位認定を申請する学生以外は、履修取り下げを認めない。 |

| 担当教員からのメッセージ | | The purpose of this course is to help students improve their foreign language proficiency, understand foreign cultures, and acquire the knowledge required in a globalized society. Students are expected to master professional academic English. With a special focus on essay structures, students will learn how to extract necessary information effectively and write in a logical and persuasive manner. Students will also study sentence composition methods and useful expressions.

Please come prepared to write! We will have many writing activities that you will have to do outside of class, and you will need to come to class prepared to share your ideas. I think you will find the way we give each other feedback interesting and useful and that your writing will get better. |
