本授業の目的およびねらい
本授業科目は，専門的学習のツールとして外国語の能力を高め，異文化理解を深めて，国際社会に相応しい教養を育むことが目的である。そのねらいは、研究拠点大学である名古屋大学の学生にふさわしい学術英語を使いこなす能力を身につけるところにある。論理的な英文のカギとなるエッセイの構造に着目し、目的に応じて必要な情報をいかに読みとるか、また逆に、自分の考えをその根拠とともにいかに説得力ある論理的な英文に組み立てるかを学ぶ。将来、専門の論文を英語で読んだり書いたりする時に、指針となる英文構成法の基礎、および実際に役立つ英語表現を多く習得する。
授業の構成
This course is taught entirely in English. Students read, write, and speak English as much as they can. This is a chance to use English and to improve English abilities naturally.

The course is mainly intended for students interested in economy and international relations.

The objective is to develop English reading and writing skills necessary for studying at Nagoya University. Students will read articles, write one report and one essay, discuss ideas in English, and deliver a group presentation. In addition, students will read extensively outside of class and complete a reading journal.

The following topics are planned, though the plan may change if necessary:
Report writing, essay writing, logic and arguments, thesis statements, citing sources, avoiding plagiarism, unity and coherence; supply and demand, environmental issues, government regulation, free trade, international cooperation, population issues, banking

成績評価の方法と基準
Assessment is based on a portfolio of written work that includes a lab report (15%), an essay (15%), a reading journal (10%), and a group presentation with a short report (10%). Also e-learning (20%), and TOEFL and Criterion scores (30%)

None are required, but an English dictionary may be useful.
注意事項
課外学習として「ぎゅっとｅ」リーディングを課し、その消化率に基づく評価を授業全体の評価の２０％とする。またＴＯＥＦＬＩＴＰ （Ｒｅａｄｉｎｇ）およびＣｒｉｔｅｒｉｏｎの評価を３０％とする。なお、５回以上欠席をした場合、「欠席」の評価がつく。英語検定試験による単位認定を申請する学生以外は、履修取り下げを認めない。

The purpose of this course is to help students improve their foreign language proficiency, understand foreign cultures, and acquire the knowledge required in a globalized society. Students are expected to master professional academic English. With a special focus on essay structures, students will learn how to extract necessary information effectively and write in a logical and persuasive manner. Students will also study sentence composition methods and useful expressions.
