本授業の目的およびねらい
本授業科目は，専門的学習のツールとして外国語の能力を高め，異文化理解を深めて，国際社会に相応しい教養を育むことが目的である。
リスニングとスピーキングを主としたコミュニケーションの能力を高める授業を行い、日常会話、さらにはディスカッションやプレゼンテーションのための基礎力を養成する。
授業の構成
We build confidence each week with an opening conversation. We then
work with topics which are chosen by the students. Students present
their topics in groups and in turn, and the class discusses them with
the instructor facilitating the discussion. Position papers are
submitted for each topic. Students are led through the process of
defining polarity, evaluating sources, and choosing topics which are
meaningful and relevant.

成績評価の方法と基準
Students are evaluated on Attendance and Participation, 40 % Position
Papers 20%, Presentations 2 x 20 % (40%) Total x 50% with Academic Express 3 accounting for 20% and the Criterion Test and TOEFL-ITP accounting for 30%

注意事項
課外学習として「Ａｃａｄｅｍｉｃ　Ｅｘｐｒｅｓｓ３」を課し、その消化率に基づく評価を授業全体の評価の２０％とする。また、ＴＯＥＦＬ　ＩＴＰ（Ｌｉｓｔｅｎｉｎｇ，Ｓｔｒｕｃｔｕｒｅ）の評価を３０％とする。５回以上欠席をした場合、「欠席」の評価がつく。英語検定試験による単位認定を申請する学生以外は、履修取り下げを認めない。
