This purpose of this course is to develop and expand students’ academic writing skills.

●授業内容
In this course, students will be guided to generate thesis statements based on topics of their interest. We will then analyze the strength of these statements in the context of a larger argument. We will discuss how to find appropriate sources of evidence for our papers and how to cite such sources. Students will write a synthesis style essay to build their background knowledge. We will then build an argumentative essay from this work. Students will then revise their essay after it has been critically evaluated. Finally, students will turn one of their essays into an abstract for a final paper.

●成績評価の方法
Grades are based on participation in class activities (20%), 2 graded essays (40%), presentation of writing (15%), and a final abstract (25%).

All reading materials will be made available to the students by the instructor.

None is required but access to a good dictionary will be helpful.

●注意事項
Students who miss 5 lessons or more cannot receive credit for this course.
５回以上欠席をした場合、「欠席」の評価がつく。履修取り下げ制度は採用しない。

Students are required to read the assigned materials outside of class in order to be ready for discussion during class time. Class materials will be provided via an email listserv created during the first lesson.
