●授業内容

The emphasis in this course is upon understanding English language cultures in relation to other cultures (including Japanese) through comparative analysis. I have already prepared some materials, but some reading, viewing (video) and discussion topics will be selected in response to the cultural and other academic interests and questions of students. What is it that you most need or want to explore through English? There will be plenty of time for discussion and questions in class. The texts may not be long but will be challenging in terms of the language and concepts to raise cultural knowledge, English reading skills, vocabulary and conceptual flexibility. Here is a tentative course outline:
1. Introduction
2. Comparing communication styles across cultures
3. The notion of East and West
4. A global overview of development across cultures
5. Work-life balance
6. The functions of pleasure in life
7. The concept of happiness across cultures
8. Education
9. Gender issues
10. The future of families
11. Techno-future
12-14. Student-requested themes
15. Course overview, feedback

Reading remains our most important method for understanding the world and learning about the most diverse ideas. Let’s deepen our cross-cultural understanding as we further develop our English reading and discussion skills. In the process, perhaps we can learn to enjoy reading more.
