●授業内容

This course will use an extensive reading approach, combined with various
academic and general reading and writing tasks centering on the understanding
the key importance of paragraph structure and the mastering of a variety of
useful academic expressions. The course will be divided into three stages.
1. First, at the beginning of this course the instructor will spend one or two
lessons explaining the principles behind extensive reading and considering the
ways in which it differs from the kind of English reading that most students
have previously experienced. Students will be asked to reflect on their own
Japanese and English reading practices and consider ways in which the
extensive reading approach might benefit them. The instructor will also
explain the system of writing tasks which will be used in the course.
Since students participating in this course will be expected to take a higher
than usual degree of responsibility for managing their own learning, the
system of class management will also be explained in detail during the first
few lessons of the course.
2. Once students are familiar with the system, they will ready to begin the
second stage of the course. Here they will be expected to progress through
the series of graded readers, reading at their own pace but aiming to
gradually increase both their speed and their level of reading
comprehension. At this stage, after reading each book, students will be
required to complete a writing assignment based on what they have read.
3. Finally, students will be given the opportunity to discuss their reading
with the instructor who will review their assignments and give them
feedback and advice on how to further improve their reading and writing
abilities.

●成績評価の方法

For this course 80% of the grade will be based on the class-based activities
described above (specifically: reading 30%, writing 30%, and attendance 20%)
and 20% will be based on items described in Section 7 below.
