●本授業の目的およびねらい

Japanese women are faced with a multitude of possible identities; this course explores the spectrum from the sweet shojo to the dangerous mountain crone. This course will consider various representations of female characters in Japanese literature and cultural texts focusing on the relationship among sociocultural power, femininity, and age. The class examines the way the narrative interprets society, and how issues (gender, aging, and discrimination of minority) are concealed, twisted, or exaggerated within cultural texts.

- This course will welcome all students who love to share their interests and opinions about Japanese society and culture.

- Remember that not all students will share your opinion. And not all students will engage in discussion with the same level of comfort. In order for all students to feel comfortable joining the discussion, it is important that we treat everyone respectfully.

- More than just reading the textbooks, we will taste various cultural contexts and actively exchange our critical opinions with classmates.
