●本授業の目的およびねらい
本授業は、英語という言語、その言語が培ってきた文化、および現代社会における英語文化についての深い教養を身につけることをその目的とする。英語・英語文化にかかわる様々な主題についての文献・資料調査、調査に基づく英語による口頭発表など、少人数授業の利点を生かした学習活動を行い、研究拠点大学である名古屋大学の学生にふさわしい学術英語の運用能力をさらに高めることを目指す。

This course is open to all students, especially students interested in western literary themes, philosophy, language, and politics. It is also recommended for students interested in studying in an English speaking country.

●授業内容
This course investigates the English language and the core literary themes of western thought to enrich students both about English culture(s) and to expand their English ability. Students will investigate common beliefs about the English language and learn why many of these beliefs may not be true. Students will also gain insight into the evolution of western thought and current political issues. In sum, students will become more proficient in English as they acquire a deeper understanding of English and its usage in the Liberal Arts and Sciences.

●成績評価の方法
Grades are based on participation in class activities (20%), an individual presentation (10%), bi-weekly quizzes (20%), a group presentation (10%), final paper (20%), and e-learning outside of class (20%) (See special instructions below)

None are required but an English dictionary will be helpful.

●注意事項
対面授業に加え、課外学習として電子教材を課し、その成績に基づく評価を授業全体の評価の２０％とする。なお、５回以上欠席をした場合、「欠席」の評価がつく。履修取り下げ制度は採用しない。
