●本授業の目的およびねらい
本授業は、学術的な英文に関する基礎的なリーディング能力とライティング能力の養成を目的とする。そのねらいは、研究拠点大学である名古屋大学の学生にふさわしい学術英語を使いこなす能力を身につけるところにある。論理的な英文のカギとなるパラグラフの構造に着目し、目的に応じて必要な情報をいかに読みとるか、また逆に、自分の考えをその根拠とともにいかに説得力ある論理的な英文に組み立てるかを学ぶ。将来、専門の論文を英語で読んだり書いたりする時に、指針となる英文構成法の基礎、および実際に役立つ英語表現を多く習得する。

●授業内容
The aim of this class is to help students develop their reading and writing
skills.
A variety of texts including news articles, articles on the internet and novels
will be used in this class. We will discuss four types of reading skills:
skimming, scanning, extensive reading and intensive reading.
1. Skimming is used to understand the gist or main idea.
2. Scanning is used to find a particular piece of information.
3. Extensive reading is used for pleasure and general understanding.
4. Intensive reading is used for accurate reading for detailed understanding.
The Curriculum Cycle will be used in the writing portion of this class. The
four stages of the Curriculum Cycle are: building up the field, modeling the
text type, joint construction and independent writing.
1. Building the field. In this stage, the aim is to make sure that students
have enough background knowledge of the topic to be able to write about it.
2. Modeling the text type. In this stage, the aim is for students to become
familiar with the purpose, overall structure and linguistic features of the
type of text they are going to write.
3. Joint construction. Here, the instructor and students write a text together,
so that students can see how the text is written.
4. Independent writing. At this stage, students write their own text.

●成績評価の方法
「ぎゅっとｅ」リーディングおよび英語（基礎）用「ぎゅっとｅ」リスニング授業全体の評価の２０％とする。 なお、５回以上欠席をした場合、「欠席」の評価がつく。 ８０％平常点。

●注意事項
対面授業に加え、課外学習として、英語（基礎）用「ぎゅっとｅ」リーディングおよび英語（基礎）用「ぎゅっとｅ」リスニングを課し、その消化率に基づく評価を授業全体の評価の２０％とする。なお、５回以上欠席をした場合、「欠席」の評価がつく。履修取り下げ制度は採用しない。
