This class consists of three parts as follows:
1) Develop your knowledge of English as a Global Language on the basis
of learning how to read an academic book by the instructor's explanation.
2) Enjoy content-based reading: we'd like to study the real picture of
the English language in the past, the present, and the future, mainly
according to the contents of the given textbook:
1. What is a global language?
2. What makes a global language?
3. Why English? (The Historical Context) 1: Origins.
4. Why English? (The Historical Context) 2: America/ Canada/ The Caribbean.
5. Why English? (The Historical Context) 3: Australia and New Zealand.
6. Why English? (The Historical Context) 4: South Africa/ South Asia
7. Why English? (The Historical Context) 5: A World View.
8. Why English? (The Cultural Foundation) 1: Access to Knowledge.
9. Why English? (The Cultural Legacy) 1: The Media.
10. Why English? (The Cultural Legacy) 2: International Travel/ Safety.
11. Why English? (The Cultural Legacy) 3: Education/ Communication.
12. The Future of Global English 1: The US Situation.
13. The Future of Global English 2: New Englishes.
14. The Future of Global English 3: Jenkins and the Concept of ELF
15. Review, Summary, and Anticipation.
3) You, the students, are supposed to read the text carefully and
summarize the content on the basis of your own research. Your
presentation in class would be the most important and emphasized portion
in this seminar.
