As part of the 'Language and Culture II' category of English courses, this      

seminar will be devoted to writing and improving essays.  Each week, one of     

the dialogs addressing issues or themes which can be linked to academic         

disciplines in the course book will be assigned, and students will need to      

write an essay of roughly 300 words and submit it at the beginning of the       

class meeting.  Throughout the term, the teacher will give advice about how     

to write essays of an academic nature, what types of likely problems to look    

out for (spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.), and how to structure a term     

paper or thesis.  Please note that no late essays - that is, any time after

67% will be based on the weekly essays, and 33% will be from an essay to        

be written on a topic given during the 'examination' class period.              

                                                                                

The book for the course will be made available from the first class             

meeting and is expected to cost less than 3000 yen.                             

                                                                                

At least one dictionary that is useful for working with the English
