●授業内容
Listening comprehension exercises will invariably involve ''listening with a
purpose.''In other words, students will be supplied with worksheets requiring
them to listen for specific items. At times, studentswill be given access to
the tape recorder and recorded lecture in order to listen to the same segment
repeatedly in order to ferret out, on their own,a particular point of infor-
mation. The content of the lectures will heavily emphasize topics of general
interest in American history, culture and literature. The first four weeks
will be a general survey of Americanhistory from its colonial beginnings
through the present era. Next we will look at excerptsfrom the works of
Washington Irving, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemmingway and James Thurber. Near
the end of the course, there will be a segment on American poetry. In
this section, studentswill study the meaning and cultural context of the
poem and then move on to actually memorizing the work.
