●本授業の目的およびねらい
This course is designed to train students in the basic elements of English oral

communication. Since listening comprehension is the essential foundation for

acquisition of a foreign language, this shall be emphasized in a variety of

ways, all of which emphasize active listening. By the end of the course, stu-

dents who actively participate in classroom activities should be able to under-

stand brief lectures in intermediate English.

●授業内容
This course has two focuses: a) listening, and b) an over-view and review of

the major grammatical structures of English at the intermediate level.

Listening practice shall be carried out using a wide variety of materials,

including brief taped lectures from various sources and live ''mini-

lectures'' presented by the instructor. Listening topics shall include Greek

myths, British versus American English, Earthquake prediction, assassination

theories, defining ''the world's largest city,'' etc. Classroom procedures for

listening comprehen-sion will invariably involve''listening with a purpose.''

In other words, students will be supplied with worksheets requiring them to

listen for specific items, such as ''the population of the city of New York in

1993.'' At times, students will be given access to the tape recorder and re-

corded lecture in order to listen to the same segment repeatedly in order to

ferret out, on their own, a particular point of information.

Structure (grammar) exercises will generally involve intensive pair-work using

prepared worksheets. After a certain amount of oral practice (using the audio-

lingual method), students will be required to create their own sentences, using

the structure that is being introduced. Structures to be emphasized in this

course include: present, past and future perfects, present tenses for the

future, modal verbs (could, should, be allowed to, would, etc.), passive verb

forms, special passive patterns (''It is said...''), etc.

Each class will involve both elements (listening and structure); elements will

be stressed (i.e. more time will be expended on them) in accordance to class

needs.
