Coursework is designed to be relevant to student interest. Much of the class
time is spent ''hands-on '' with the material. Students are guided through
strategy practices such as ''skimming,'' ''scanning,'' and ''context guessing''
while reading. These practices are in addition to short, but necessary, gram-
matical reviews, covered in an informal way and directly connected to the mate-
rial covered, taking the edge off grammar and making it personal as opposed to
clinical. Students will answer comprehension questions from the material in
written and oral form at throughout the semester. Classes are ended with a
basic mastery review of the content covered on that day. Students are inform-
ally tested throughout the seme ster on mastery of previously taught content,
and reading skills attained. They are tested formally during the midterm exam
and in a final exam at the end of the semester. The midterm and final tests
will only cover content and skills which have been well-covered during the
class, and students will be instructed and in formed of the nature of the test
in advance. In addition, students will be guided through self-assessment
throughout the semester, allowing them to plot their own path and personalize
the course.
