●本授業の目的およびねらい
The purpose of this course is to help students use English more confidently and
comfortably, especially when reading English. In my experience of teaching
English to Japanese university students, I have found that many students do not
put into use what they learned at school. A major goal of this course is to
demonstrate to and encourage students to use English as a tool of communication
rather than something they memorise in order to pass examinations.

●授業内容
This course is conducted entirely in English. Students must be warned that the
lecturer has limited command of the Japanese language. Students who enroll in
this course must be comfortable with the idea of English being used as the
medium of instruction or willing to try to learn English using English as the
language of the classroom. A major aspect of each lesson is to teach students
to read English effectively in different kinds of writing. Students will be
assigned newspaper articles, magazine articles, short stories etc. to read as
homework. In class, students will take part in activities based on their
reading assignment in pairs, groups or as a class. Unfamiliar usage of words
and phrases will be elaborated on, followed by attempts by students to put
these new words and phrases into active use. Differences in style (i.e. casual
or formal) and variety (American English or British English) will also be
pointed out. The emphasis is on practical usage rather than theoretical study.
In addition, students have plenty of opportunities to practise speaking English
in class. Some class time is also spent on correcting common usage errors in
vocabulary and grammar and in each lesson an aspect of pronunciation is
introduced to students to help them speak more clearly.
