●本授業の目的およびねらい

The primary aims of this course are to help students:
1)Increase their levels of confidence and ability in written English
2)Develop an appreciation of writing as a process involving brainstorming, drafting, feedback, and revision
3)Express clear and logical positions about meaningful topics through writing

●授業内容

Students will write a rigorous academic essay in stages throughout the semester. They will choose their own essay topics with the instructor’s guidance and share their writing with classmates. Specific lesson topics will include:
*Freewriting to generate ideas
*Determining a socially relevant topic and writing a research proposal
*Finding relevant and reliable sources
*Bringing source content into your writing: summary, paraphrase, quotation, critique, and citation
*Determining an overall position, or thesis
*Supporting your thesis with examples and logical reasoning
*Acknowledging and responding to other points of view
*Structures of academic essays at the levels of the paragraph, section, and text
*Providing detailed and helpful feedback to classmates through peer review

 Participation (30%); Research proposal (20%); Academic essay (50%)

None is required. All materials will be provided by the instructor.

None is required, but students are recommended to bring a dictionary to class.

Students who miss 5 lessons or more cannot receive credit for this course
5回以上欠席をした場合、「欠席」の評価がつく。履修取り下げ制度は採用しない。

This class will have an active learning environment. A significant part of students’ grades will be earned through enthusiastic participation in group work, class discussions, and peer review activities. Students will be expected to write multiple drafts of their essays and revise them in response to feedback from classmates and the instructor. Please feel free to approach the instructor with any requests or concerns about this class.
