●本授業の目的およびねらい

The primary aims of this course are to help students:
1)Increase their abilities to read different types of texts in English
2)Respond to texts critically and open conversations with classmates about readings
3)Write clear and well-reasoned reviews of texts about meaningful topics

●授業内容

This class will use a discussion format, and students will be responsible for selecting most of the texts that we will talk about. In early class sessions, the instructor will demonstrate how to choose and summarize appropriate readings, write discussion questions, and manage class conversations. Then, students will sign up to lead discussions on particular days. Towards the end of the semester, we will focus on producing a written review of a text that expresses a point of view about a meaningful topic. This review will require students to accurately summarize the author’s position and present a well-reasoned critical response.

 Participation (30%); Selecting readings and leading class discussions (50%); Written review (20%)

None is required. All materials will be provided by the instructor or selected by students.

●参考書

None is required, but students are recommended to bring a dictionary to class.

●注意事項

Students who miss 5 lessons or more cannot receive credit for this course.
5回以上欠席をした場合、「欠席」の評価がつく。履修取り下げ制度は採用しない。

This class will have an active learning environment. A significant part of students’ grades will be earned through enthusiastic participation in discussions of readings selected by classmates. Students will be expected to send their chosen readings to the instructor ahead of time so that he can make copies to distribute to the class. Please feel free to approach the instructor with any requests or concerns about this class.
