●本授業の目的およびねらい

The overall purpose of this advanced level writing course is to develop
students' academic and professional English writing skills and help
them gain self-confidence in writing a variety of different kinds of texts.
Specifically, the course aims to teach students how to write more skillfully
though the use of an extensive reading based report writing approach. Through
this course, students will have a chance improve their writing, reading and
speaking abilities and to share ideas about the books they have read.

●授業内容

In this course, students will write reports on the books they read. They will
then take it in turns to give short (approximately 10 minute) oral slide-based
presentations in English on books that they have read and any particular
difficulties they encountered in reading them. The aim of the course is to
break away from dependence on textbooks or simulated communication organized by
the teacher and move instead towards genuine communication organized by the
students themselves. Accordingly, students will not be obliged to write about
particular books but will be free to write about any books that interest them
and which they feel will interest their classmates. However, given that this is
an advanced class, it is hoped that students will choose to write at least one
report about a book related to their academic or professional interests.

Students will be expected to write either two or three reports, depending
on the number of participants who take the course. Students must prepare, edit
and proofread their written reports carefully. While each student is giving
their presentation, based on their reports, the other students will take notes,
either in English or Japanese. After each presentation there will be a
follow-up question and answer / discussion session in English and the teacher
will provide the presenter with detailed personalized feedback on his or her
report and presentation performance and give advice on how to improve their
writing, reading and speaking skills.
