●本授業の目的およびねらい

The purpose of this class is to help students gain confidence and skill in academic writing. Students will improve their ability to write clearly and logically.

●授業内容

We will work on advanced academic writing structures. We will learn strategies to do the following things: 1) Understanding different types of academic writing; 2.) writing thesis statements; 3) incorporating evidence into well-structured paragraphs; and 5) various ways to incorporate ideas that we disagree with

Week 1: Class Introduction [Free writing]
Week 2: Journal Articles: Components, purposes, evaluations
Week 3: Journal Articles: Literature Reviews
Week 4: Academic Books: Components, purposes, evaluations
Week 5: References and Reference Lists: How to make and read them
Week 6: Book reviews Part 1: How to write them
Week 7: From thesis statements to topic sentences and conclusions
Week 8: Evidence and well-structured paragraphs
Week 9: Using film and literature in paragraphs
Week 10: Using numerical evidence in paragraphs
Week 11: Using juxtaposition in essays
Week 12: Acknowledging Part 1: Showing you read other debates
Week 13: Acknowledging Part 2: Dismissing other debates
Week 14: Discussing ideas we partially agree with
Week 15: Book reviews part 2: Politely critiquing ideas

●成績評価の方法

In class quizzes (20%); class participation (especially writing and giving evaluative feedback to other students (30%); and a final paper (50%).

●教科書

The teacher will prepare handouts for students. Students will be responsible for distributing an appropriate amount of photocopies of their writing in their class. Please bring a dictionary to all classes.

5回以上授業を欠席した場合は「欠席」とする。履修取り下げ制度を採用しない。
