●本授業の目的およびねらい
本授業は、英語という言語、その言語が培ってきた文化、および現代社会における英語文化についての深い教養を身につけることをその目的とする。英語・英語文化にかかわる様々な主題についての文献・資料調査、調査に基づく英語による口頭発表など、少人数授業の利点を生かした学習活動を行い、研究拠点大学である名古屋大学の学生にふさわしい学術英語の運用能力をさらに高めることを目指す。

●授業内容
History of English Seminar
Class discussions will be based on topics from the assigned textbook. The course will follow the development of the English language from ancient to modern times. Beginning with a brief overview of its Indo-European context, the course will follow its history through the centuries. How did English sound and look like hundreds of years ago? How did English come to have so many irregular spellings? Which languages have impacted English the most? And what were the reasons for this? How is English continuing to change within our own lifetimes? Such questions will be the topics of discussion in this seminar.
Each class will include a short lecture by the teacher. Students will then demonstrate their understanding through group/class discussions. The topics to be studied will include:
・Historical development
・Comparative linguistics
・Sound change
・Impact on vocabulary from other languages
・Dialects
・British and American English
・World Englishes
・Effects of technology

●注意事項
対面授業に加え、課外学習として電子教材を課し、その成績に基づく評価を授業全体の評価の２０％とする。なお、５回以上欠席をした場合、「欠席」の評価がつく。履修取り下げ制度は採用しない。
