Note: The part of the course for which the teacher is responsible is designed to encourage students to read, think, and write in the spirit of a liberal-arts education. Be prepared to devote an appropriate amount of time to the readings as homework; by persevering, important rewards will include a better intellectual appreciation of the subject of ethics. Also, please be on time so that the class meetings can be used effectively, and note that memorized assignments cannot be made up. (A paper copy of the syllabus, with or without any changes from this version, will be handed out in the first week of term.)
