This is a course in basic writing. The main focus is the paragraph, with the aim of getting students eventually to write short compositions of two or more paragraphs. Writing activities support the process of composition-prewriting, writing, peer editing, and revision-followed by feedback from the teacher.
Students write at first for fluency through timed writings in their journals on a wide variety of topics and sentence starters suggested by the teacher and the textbook. Later, students select early drafts to polish into well-made paragraphs, with a topic sentence, evidence and/or explanation, and a conclusion. In time, students may expand their early efforts into longer writings.
To support and enrich their writing, students take part in extensive reading and formal vocabulary study. Both of these activities help students increase their base of English grammar and their understanding of how words are related.
Extensive reading asks students to read texts that are fun and easy to read; students keep a record of their time and pages covered on a form from the teacher. Similarly, vocabulary study broadens and deepens students' knowledge of English collocations, word families, synonyms and antonyms. To these ends, students complete vocabulary lists for new vocabulary that they find in their reading. Forms for vocabulary lists are provided by the teacher. Such vocabulary-building activities conform to Nation (2001) and (2013).

If you want to become a better writer in English (or any other language), you can do three things: write a lot, read a lot, and build your vocabulary in the target language.

One way to become a better writer is to write as often and as much as possible. You don't have to show all of your writing to the teacher or to your partners. Just write freely in your journal and keep a record of the number of words you write. In time, you will choose some writings from your journal, expand them, and show them to partners. You will help each other improve your writing through reader/writer workshops. When your writing has been edited, proofread and polished, you'll give it to the teacher for evaluation.

Another way to become a better writer is to read a lot in English. Doing so will increase your base of English grammar and vocabulary. To this end, you will do extensive reading activities. From the university library you will borrow and read books that are fun and easy for you to read. You'll keep a record of your reading on a form provided by the teacher.

A third way to become a better writer is to study vocabulary directly. You can broaden and deepen your knowledge of English vocabulary (collocations, word families, synonyms and antonyms) by completing vocabulary lists for new vocabulary that you find in your extensive reading, your textbook, or any other English source. You'll get these forms for vocabulary lists from the teacher.
