This class aims to increase students’ understanding of common structures used in English academic essays in order to improve their reading comprehension and writing skills. Although the class emphasizes reading and writing, students will be expected to complete most reading assignments outside of class. The majority of class time will be devoted to discussing readings in small groups, writing in response to prompts, and giving feedback on classmates’ texts. Students will take a process approach to writing, including brainstorming, drafting, peer review, revising, and editing. Throughout the semester, they will write a rigorous academic essay in stages. They will select their own essay topics, which can be related to their majors or any area of academic interest.
